My PhD research focuses on the everyday experiences of deaf Indian women who have migrated and settled in London – I am interested in their everyday life experiences and their interactions with deaf people in different social social contexts.  I look at how these experiences are changing over time as they maintain a sense of belonging and identities. I study these themes through the lenses of intersectionality, translocality and temporality.

Questions that guide my research are the following:

1. How do deaf women from India relate to

a) other deaf Indian migrant women who moved to the UK;

b) other deaf women/men from Indian heritage (but who were born in the UK), and

c) other deaf migrants and Londoners of various backgrounds?

2. What forms of gender-related constraints do these deaf Indian migrants experience as individuals as they move across various spaces?

3. How have their experiences shifted over time, especially during the COVID era?
