In this project (PhD project at Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway), I accompanied five deaf women, after they gave birth, to health centres in Norway which they visited for consultations with nurses. Sign language interpreters were present at the consultations. I recorded the consultations for close-up analysis, and interviewed the women about their experience of communication during the consultations. I am currently working on three articles based on this data:

  • Deaf people’s additional labour in taking responsibility for their own accessibility and inclusion
  • Language practices and strategies in the consultations where sign language interpreters are present
  • Language ideologies and language attitudes regarding communication during the consultations
