Workshop: Working as/with research assistants in Deaf Studies and Sign Language Studies projects

When: Wednesday 1 December 2021, 3-5 pm.

What: Annelies Kusters and Mette Sommer will lead a workshop about working with research assistants in Deaf Studies and Sign Language Studies projects.

Various scenarios are possible here: deaf project leaders working with hearing research assistants, hearing project leaders working with deaf research assistants, deaf project leaders working with deaf research assistants, hearing project leaders working with hearing research assistants. We will reflect on various types of work as research leaders and as research assistant, such as in a PhD project, in a postdoc project, in a large international project, and so on.

We will discuss how roles of research assistants can blend such as research assistants also working as interpreters, or research assistants being a participant and a researcher at the same time.

We also will discuss the role of research assistants in Deaf Studies and Sign Language Studies as a whole, as well as power dynamics between researchers and their assistants, and the inclusion of assistants in writing publications.

The workshop is in BSL (without interpretation). There will be breakout groups during the workshop, in which participants can exchange their thoughts and experiences.
