SIGNS@HWU is a group of researchers who focus on sign language studies and Deaf Studies. We are situated in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, Heriot-Watt University. SIGNS@HWU was established as a cluster of the Centre for Translation and Interpreting Studies in Scotland, to profile the world-leading interdisciplinary research being conducted at Heriot-Watt University.

Prof. Jemina Napier
  • Jemina Napier (hearing, she/her) is Professor and Chair of Intercultural Communication and Associate Principal of Research Culture at Heriot-Watt University. She joined the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies in 2013

  • Research interests: professional interpreter-mediated communication in different contexts, language brokering (non-professional interpreting), family language policy), multilingualism, women in the interpreting field
